Southleigh Community - Anns Story
After leaving care at 18, Ann began getting into trouble with Police for threatening and assualtative behaviour and eventually was charged with two arson attacks. When her depressive and paranoid illness was diagnosed in Prison, she was moved to a low secure Woman’s unit on a Section 37 and treated with Clozapine . Although settled on this medication, she continued to self harm, experience poor motivation and low self esteem with paranoid thoughts.
Ann was admitted to The Woodleigh Community in February 2008 at the age of 34. Here, the team worked closely with Ann to slowly improve her self esteem by engaging her in her passion for caring for animals. For the past year, Ann has been attending a local community city farm twice a week unescorted and the improvement in Ann’s motivation to; care for herself, do some cooking, lose weight and cease self harming completely has been magnificent.
Ann has experienced two minor paranoid relapses, but has worked through these with a modified CBT programme of support with the psychologist. She is no longer on Section 37 and is also attending College to do an NVQ 2 in Pet care. The team are working with Ann and her funders in considering moving Ann in the next year to lesser supported accommodation. Ann says that “the last 18 months at The Woodleigh Community has been the happiest and most settled time in her life” Ann is reluctant to move on, so a slow, collaborative and very supportive approach will be required.
