Occupation Therapy Consultant joins the Southleigh Community Team
Ingrid Bacon joined us in February 2009, as an Occupational Therapist Consultant for Southleigh Community. She brings with her vast experience in Mental Health having worked in a variety of settings including acute mental health, alcohol and drug rehabilitation and forensic services.
Ingrid is a highly qualified clinician with post graduation studies in motivational interviewing and an MSc in Health Studies. Ingrid is also a qualified Systemic Family Therapist and has a particular interest in the involvement of families in the recovery process.
Ingrid’s experience includes leading a team of senior therapists at Farmfield Hospital, Priory Secure Services, a 52 bed low and medium secure hospital specialised in treating male patients aged 18-65. As the Head OT, Ingrid was part of the Hospital Senior Management Team, responsible for the management of the therapy department consisting of OT staff, gym instructor and seasonal workers. The work involved the management and recruitment of staff including supervision, mentorship, individual training and provision of training sessions and presentations on a variety of subjects.
Some of her responsibilities at Farmfield included:
- The development of the OT pathway, procedures and standards according to the OT Code of Practice and Standards of Practice.
- Screening assessments or risk assessments of patients, utilising both standardised and non-standardised assessments.
- The development of Hospital procedures and initiatives in accordance with current legislation. This included carrying out audits or quality initiatives in relation to service provision and quality.
- Provision of relevant reports for the Multidisciplinary Team and external agencies.
- The implementation of some specific strategies,
- In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, the planning and implementation of a hospital-wide graded group programme.
- The planning and implementation of vocational rehabilitation and social inclusion projects;
- Devising a departmental CPD strategy;
- Planning field work placement and education for occupational therapy students.
Before working for the Priory group, Ingrid was responsible for structuring the occupational therapy service for the first Rehabilitation Hospital for Drug and Alcohol dependents, created by the Government of the State of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, Ingrid was responsible for the implementation of group and individual interventions as well as training, supervision and mentorship of non-qualified and qualified staff. She worked representing the government as a key speaker at different venues, on a variety of subjects including drug dependence and family therapy; providing presentations in conferences and projects including families and carers.
Ingrid’s career has also included private practice, family and couple therapy and varied volunteer work on three continents, including a year in acute mental health in West Africa.
At Southleigh Community, Ingrid aims to work in partnership with the clients and carers, establishing client–led occupational therapy initiatives, thus enabling clients to achieve their goals in the recovery journey.
