Service Model

Southleigh Community is a 27 bed independent sector hospital which provides care and support to those with mental health needs in order that they can live and function safely within a community setting. Our rehabilitation model focuses on ‘Recovery’ aimed at helping all of our service users to achieve a quality of life that is meaningful and acceptable to them. Our comprehensive programme places a high priority on inclusion and we actively encourage service users to access community resources to help equip them with daily living skills, which in turn increases their ability to live more independently. We expect that individuals will stay with us for 18-24 months before moving on to more independent accommodation, though this is of course flexible depending on the ongoing needs of each individual.

The new locked ward service accepts, patients who do not require a low secure environment but do need an extra level of containment, either as a short term measure or because they will require a more careful integration into the main unit.

Admission Criteria

Southleigh’s registration with the Care Quality Commission, allows us to admit individuals who have a primary diagnosis of mental illness, who whilst not requiring current levels of security or acute care, do nonetheless, still require a high level of care and support. People who may be detained under the Mental Health Act, under Sections 2, 3, 37, 37/41 and conditional discharges can be admitted.

Environment

Southleigh Community consists of a main building with 21 en-suite rooms and 6 flats in the grounds which enable a more independent level of living. We have a pleasant garden, the upkeep of which forms part of our activity programme.

Multi Disciplinary Team and Therapeutic Approach

Our team is made up of Consultant Psychiatrists, Consultant Psychologist and Psychology Assistants, Consultant Occupational Therapist and our team of qualified Nurses and Support Workers. We are also recruiting a Social Worker to add to this team. This team, with its diverse skills and experience, allows us to take a dynamic approach to Recovery, utilising a range of therapeutic interventions.

  • A person centred multi-disciplinary approach to care, treatment and support
  • Reviews focused on individual need and measured outcomes
  • Structured daily living activities
  • Opportunities for education, employment and leisure
  • Psychological assessment and provision of structured and occupational therapies
  • Comprehensive risk management which promotes opportunity

Care Pathway

Our rehabilitation model focuses on strengths and positive experiences and is aimed at moving each individual from their current levels of support and treatment, to more independent living in the community. We help individuals recognise and manage as much as possible their own mental health needs, including risk factors/relapse signatures in order that they move on either to our on site supported flats or to accommodation in the community with the support of the Community Health Team.
